Founder of Marble Wit Research Co., Kait is trained in theater, puppetry, arts research, and arts administration and policy. She utilizes the performing and creative arts as teaching and healing tools in our personal and professional lives. Yiğit Mengüç
Co-Owner of Marble Wit Research Co., Yiğit is trained in mechanical engineering and soft robotics. He now practices basic noticing, which is conveniently applicable to intuition and discovery in the scientific endeavor. What's in a name?
Marble is a rock, a toy, one’s sanity. Marble is limestone. It is used as a building material, art material, and adornment. Of the Earth, Marble is formed by time. It is strong, but it is not unyielding. Metamorphic, marble is what we lose through recrystallization. Marble is made by transformation. It is also what is carved away to reveal the beautiful statue within.
Marbles, the toy, are small, hard, globes of smooth glass containing mini galaxies of colors swirling in their center. Whether competitively shooting marbles, or constructing intricate marble runs, marbles are hands-on and beautiful playthings that consume our attention.
Marbling is also an artistic process. Ebru is the traditional Turkish art of marbling where images and patterns are created by “sprinkling and brushing colour pigments onto a pan of oily water and then transferring the patterns to paper." (UNESCO) The result is an intricate complication of colors that play together well. Historically, this type of marbling has been used in publishing. This vivid abstraction has long invited readers to step inside a book’s pages.
Wit has its soul in brevity; resourceful, practical intelligence.
How we got here:
We have spent over a decade in constant dialogue and debate about the nature of our professions of curiosity — Kait in art and craft, and Yiğit in science and engineering. We have learned from observing each other’s modes of inquiry and ongoing, professional development. We are united, in part, by a love of noticing and a desire to better understand both the people and the world around us through earnest curiosity. After two decades of our own careers, Kait founded Marble Wit during the tumult of new-parenthood in the pandemic and Yiğit joined on soon after. We began Marble Wit Research Co. with a simple desire; to work with inquisitive, ethical, and loving humans and to approach research work from a place of wonder.
